Shenandoah Medical Center (SMC) respects the right of a patient to make decisions regarding their own health care and promote the principle that adults have the right to refuse or accept medical treatment. An "advance directive" allows an adult individual to direct their medical care in the event they become incapacitated and are no longer able to communicate his/her wishes regarding medical decisions for themselves. Advance Directives are documents that enable you to make decisions now about your medical care in the future. They offer guidance to your family and doctors when you cannot speak for yourself, and help to assure that your values and important wishes are carried out. They can also be used to appoint someone to make decisions for you if you can't do so yourself.
