What is Lymphedema?

Lymphedema occurs when your lymphatic system can’t drain lymph fluid from tissues and lymph nodes. This can lead to build up buildup and swelling of the body.

Symptoms

  • Swelling of areas in the body
  • Feeling of heaviness or tightness
  • Reduced range of motion
  • Persistent pitting when skin is pressed
  • Swelling that comes and goes
  • Skin Changes (hardening or thickening)
  • Aching or discomfort
  • Tight-fitting rings, watches, clothes, or shoes

Causes

  • Lymph node removal
  • Radiation Therapy
  • Chemotherapy
  • Infection or Injury
  • Surgery affecting lymphatic drainage
  • Obesity or lack of physical activity

Managing Lymphedema

Compression Therapy 

  • Use compression garments, compression wraps, or short-stretch compression bandages

Manual Lymphatic Drainage 

  • Deep messages or general lymph drainage techniques done by Certified Lymphedema Therapist

Exercise 

  • Breaking exercises help stimulate lymph flow and reduce flued buildup
  • Low intensity exercised focusing on gradual and controlled movement
