Nationally Renowned Respiratory Care

Imagine taking a deep breath of fresh morning air or a leisurely evening stroll. These are basic actions that that most of us take for granted. Yet, for those suffering from chronic lung disease, such simple pleasures may not be possible.

The Respiratory Care Department at the Shenandoah Medical Center assists patients with known or suspected pulmonary disease or dysfunction. Our team has one goal in mind - to assist patients to improve the quality of their lives through improved breathing. These efforts have been recognized. The Shenandoah Medical Center earned the "Quality Respiratory Care" designation from the American Association for Respiratory Care. We are one of only eight Iowa hospitals to receive this prestigious honor last year.

Our Respiratory Care Department provides a comprehensive program of respiratory care services on both an inpatient and outpatient basis. Our licensed respiratory therapists work with physicians to evaluate and develop individual treatment plans on each patient. With extensive training in pulmonary medicine and many years of professional experience, the team offers a comprehensive array of diagnostic, therapeutic, and educational services. They also have the newest and the best equipment and state-of-the-art technology that rivals, and occasionally exceeds, the resources you will find at larger metropolitan area hospitals.

Respiratory Therapy

Respiratory therapists are an integral part of a hospital's health care team. Shenandoah Medical Center has four registered respiratory therapists and one registered polysomnographic technologist. Each of our therapists is equipped to serve as a consultant to the physician in the treatment and management of respiratory problems. Each therapist works with nurses and other team members in coordinating and implementing an overall patient care strategy.

The role of the respiratory therapist is to administer and assess the effectiveness of prescribed treatments, to evaluate the effects on other body systems, to evaluate the effects of non-pulmonary abnormalities on the cardiopulmonary function, and to relay this information to other members of the health care team. These functions are accomplished by therapeutic administration of oxygen, rehabilitation techniques, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and maintenance of natural and artificial airways. Specific tests are performed to assist the physician to diagnose and facilitate the monitoring and treatment of patients. These tests include the measurement of ventilatory volumes, pressures, flows, and the analysis of blood and respiratory gases.
